Dear Friends of PDP,

As many of you know, we are in the midst of building our biggest show to date - Hover Space. It will premiere at Z Space in SF Nov. 30th-Dec. 3rd, so please save the date! We are thrilled with the progress on the show and had a successful residency at Z Space last month in order for our fantastic set designer, Sean Riley, to build a prototype of the floating stage. We are well on our way to completing this exciting show.

We are still shy of our fundraising goals, and are reaching out to ask for support. We have launched our Kickstarter campaign (kickstarter is an online fundraising platform) and would love for you to take a look. In addition to Hover Space, I have been immersed in Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s latest work, Red Black and Green a Blues, which will premiere at YBCA next week. See the information below.

red, black & GREEN: a blues

From 2008 to 2010, Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s the break/s: a mixtape for stage stormed across the U.S. with wildly popular performances in 16 cities. The Washington Post exclaimed, “Rarely do word and movement mesh so seamlessly and elegantly that the audience is left with the thought that drives them. But such is the case with Marc Bamuthi Joseph whose stories put sound and gesture on a single continuum of expression.”

Now, Joseph returns with a new evening-length work building on his signature mix of fierce and poetic text, dance, music and film: red, black & GREEN: a blues (rbGb).

rbGb reunites seven artists from the break/s — writer/performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph; director Michael John Garcés; choreographer Stacey Printz; musician Tommy Shepherd; documentary filmmaker Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi; media designer David Szlasa; and lighting designer James Clotfelter.

Joining Joseph onstage is rising star of the contemporary art world Theaster Gates (featured at the 2010 Whitney Biennial, MCA Chicago and the Mllwaukee Art Museum) who created the richly layered and dynamic set from repurposed materials; and triple threat dancer/actor/singer Traci Tolmaire.

red, black & GREEN: a blues is a deeply collaborative performance work that begins with the question “What sustains life in your community?” As both a performance and an immersive installation, rbGb brings forth inclusive, challenging and inspiring definitions of sustainability in the voices of people often excluded from the mainstream “green” movement. Ultimately, the message is clear — LIFE is LIVING.
